AT&T will soon have a new tablet to offer alongside its myriad iPad options and the original Samsug Galaxy Tab. No, it wont be one of the many newer Android tablets you may have been reading about. Its the HP TouchPad that is coming soon to the carriers network.
This wont be a run-of-the-mill, launch day TouchPad, either. The AT&T version will feature a 4G modem, 32GB of internal storage, and a 1.5GHz processor. Thats a nice bump from the Wi-Fi only TouchPads 1.2GHz powerplant, and an upgrade which will no doubt squash some of the performance issues reviews bemoaned in their early hands-on testing. PreCentral got its hands on this information courtesy of some leaked presentation slides just last week, and now its been officially confirmed by HP.
What hasnt been confirmed is a launch date, outright purchase price, or contract pricing. PreCentral had pegged the 4G TouchPad for an August launch, and that certainly fits with HPs vague in time for back-to-school remark in the official post.
The announcement also comes hot on the heels of HP shuffling the executive deck over at its webOS unit, with former lead Jon Rubenstein moving into a new role with HPs personal systems group as its product innovation chief. Stephen DeWitt, who headed that same personal systems group, will bring his waste-cutting, profit boosting skills to webOS as its new head. The move has some webOS diehards nervous, fearing that the operations-minded DeWitt might put a damper on webOS innovation. Under his watch HP laptops generally got sexier, however, and a little added sex appeal wouldnt hurt webOS, either.
