After seeing what Nvidias quad-core Kal-El processor was capable of doing on an Android tablet, there was speculation (and hope) that the muscle-bound silicon would wind up inside Amazons Hollywood tablet which is due out later this year.
With a massive content delivery network at its behest, and its very own Android Appstore, Amazon is well-positioned to provide a seamless tablet experience that can really compete with Apple and the iPad so the company isnt going to settle for middling hardware in its debut devices. Amazon wants to impress, but it looks as though Nvidia wont be providing the horsepower.
According to a DigiTimes source, the Amazon tablets will utilize TI OMAP processors certainly a capable core, as owners of the BlackBerry PlayBook can attest. No specifics were revealed, however, so until Jeff Bezos makes with an official revelation (or tipsters decide to spill the beans) well have to wait patiently for full details. DigiTimes also reports that touch panels are being provided by Wintek who has provided internals to the likes of Apple and Nokia in the past.
Amazon has lofty goals for its tablets, hoping to ship between 700,000 and 800,000 per month in 2011. With a launch now expected as soon as August, thats a healthy 4 million tablets on the top end which should inject a healthy dose of competition into the Android tablet scene.
Price points have yet to be revealed, but lets hope Amazon plans on shaking things up a little. Frankly, Im starting to feel a sense of deja vu every time another OEM announces a $499 32GB Android tablet. Amazon, of course, wants to lock customers in as life-long book, music, and video purchasers, so the company might just be willing to slim down profit margins on its hardware in order to entice buyers. Fingers crossed.
