It’s December, and you know what that means: egg nog, Christmas trees, and Internet top ten lists from both the year past and the year to come. One early attempt at divination amounts to a lump of coal in Microsoft’s stocking: IDC doesn’t exactly expect the desktop version of Windows 8 to leap off the shelves. In fact, the analysis firm bluntly says that Windows 7 users probably won’t even care about the new OS when it launches.

“Windows 8 will be largely irrelevant to the users of traditional PCs, and we expect effectively no upgrade activity from Windows 7 to Windows 8 in that form factor,” IDC reports, according to ZDNet’s Mary-Jo Foley (the IDC report itself costs $3,500). IDC expects

Electronics giant Sony has demonstrated a battery that runs on shredded paper, and produces water as a waste product.

At the Eco-Products conference in Tokyo, Sony had a group of kids put paper in a solution of water mixed with enzymes that break down the cellulose and generate current. In the demo, it powered a small fan.

Sony’s spokespeople told Agence France-Presse that the mechanism is similar to the one used by termites to digest wood. In this case, though, the enzymes eat the paper and make electrons and hydrogen ions. T

TeleNav has launched a browser-based turn-by-turn navigation service for mobile phones written in HTML5. The service will be free for consumers and developers of mobile websites and apps will be able to integrate turn-by-turn directions into their products.

Similar to TeleNav’s award-winning GPS navigation application, the HTML5 navigation service will include full-color moving maps, audio directions, and automatic rerouting if the driver misses a turn. TeleNav’s HTML5 navigation service will be free for both developers and consumers and will support all major mobile platforms.

Apple is reported to be working on a whole new concept for TVs. It is rumored that alleged Apple TV would use SIRI technology and would be able to follow voice commands. The TV is likely to be released in late 2012 or early 2013. But looks like, for once, Microsoft may manage to beat Apple. The Redmond company has released a new update for Xbox 60. This update will allow you to control your multimedia through Kinect-based voice commands.

Microsoft has also released a number of other updates. Your Xbox 60 would now be able to stream new on demand content from EPIX, Hulu Plus and Netflix.

Slashgear is pointing to an article in The Daily that have sources saying Microsoft is thinking about porting parts of its Office Suite for the iPad. Weve heard this before certainly, and if you get past the emotions of rivalry and into the land of dollars and cents it only makes sense.

While the focus is on Word, Excel and Powerpoint, Microsoft does have one of its Office products already available for iOS and thats a sort of lackluster version of OneNote. That App is intended for the iPhone but can be used on the iPad.

Given how every company has its own Cloud these days it would be interesting to see if Microsoft can make this work with its Office 365 and the Office Hub in Windows Phone.
